Rip City Skates
Santa Monica, California, US
A shop that has served Santa Monica skaters continuously since 1978 — the staff have seen every generation of returning skater walk in, and the setups from your era are part of the shop's own history.
Services
The same small building on Santa Monica Boulevard since 1978, and by its own account not much changed since — one of the oldest skate shops anywhere and a piece of the Dogtown era that is still open for business. If you last bought a board in the eighties, this is the shop that remembers it, ten minutes from Venice Beach Skatepark.
Rip City is the shop returning skaters make a pilgrimage to: it opened in 1978 and has traded from the same building on Santa Monica Boulevard ever since, with a reputation for looking the part. Hours are 10:30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday and noon to 4pm Sunday, and web orders ship Monday to Friday if you would rather order ahead. The Cove Skatepark at Memorial Park is only a few blocks south, Venice Beach Skate Park is a short roll down to the coast, and the whole Dogtown story happened within a couple of miles of the door.
