Bar Beach Skatepark (Empire Park)

Landmark coastal concrete skatepark designed by Convic overlooking Bar Beach. Features an expansive plaza street course with low ledges and gentle banks physically separated from the iconic 11-foot deep gold bowl.

Set within Empire Park directly opposite the surf breaks of Bar Beach, this landmark Convic facility is a centerpiece of Newcastle’s coastal skate heritage. Famous nationally for its deep 2.1-to-3.3-metre (7-to-11-foot) “gold bowl” trimmed with real pool coping, the park also encompasses a comprehensive street plaza tailored for gradual progression.

While the deep transition bowl requires expert commitment, older skaters can spend productive, low-impact sessions across the expansive street plaza. Because the street course is physically decoupled from the bowl’s drop-in decks, you can carve across low-angle perimeter banks, work on rolling curb ollies, and dial in flat-rail board slides without obstructing bowl skaters. The generous flatground corridors allow ample space to regain pushing power and balance at your own rhythm.

The park is free and open 24 hours, with public amenities including parking, drinking fountains, and council restrooms along Memorial Drive. Since the park lacks dedicated floodlighting, plan your skates around daylight hours. Early mornings between sunrise and 8:30 AM offer pristine coastal stillness and near-empty concrete before midday crowds arrive; during southerly ocean swells, keep an eye out for sea spray blowing across the coastal road.
