Your Brain at 45 Can Still Learn New Tricks

The thought shows up early for most returning skaters, usually right after the first failed attempt at something you used to do without thinking: maybe I’m just too old for this now.

I had that thought at 46, trying to relearn a kickturn I could do blindfolded at nineteen. It took me three sessions to get it back. At nineteen it took me one afternoon. My first conclusion was that my brain had lost the ability to learn movement the way it used to.

That conclusion is wrong, and understanding why has made me a more patient learner — which, it turns out, is the actual skill adult beginners need.

Neuroplasticity doesn’t switch off

The idea that the adult brain is fixed — that neural wiring is basically locked in place after childhood — was the standard view in neuroscience for most of the twentieth century. It’s been overturned. The brain retains the ability to form new neural connections and reorganize existing ones throughout life. This is what “neuroplasticity” actually refers to, and it doesn’t have a hard cutoff age.

What does change with age is the rate and the starting mechanism. Children acquire motor skills largely through implicit learning — repetition and feedback, with very little conscious analysis. Adults lean more heavily on explicit learning at first: we think our way through a movement, break it into steps, consciously correct ourselves. That’s slower to get started, but it isn’t a worse process. It’s a different one, and it has real advantages once you know how to use it.

Why the adult path feels harder

The explicit-first approach has a cost early on: it’s effortful and self-conscious in a way that pure repetition isn’t. You’re narrating the trick to yourself instead of just doing it, and that narration slows you down and makes early attempts feel clumsy even when the underlying coordination is closer than it looks.

The advantage shows up later. Adults are generally better at diagnosing why an attempt failed, because we can consciously analyze what went wrong instead of just repeating blindly. A kid might eventually stumble into the right movement through volume alone. An adult can often shortcut that process by identifying the specific error — weight too far back, popping too early — and correcting it directly.

What actually helps adult motor learning

A few things make a measurable difference in how efficiently that explicit-to-automatic transition happens:

Sleep matters between sessions. You do build skill during practice itself — the in-session reps are what generate the raw improvement. But sleep is one of the key contributors to locking that improvement in, and some of the consolidation genuinely happens overnight rather than in the moment. That’s why the gains from a practice block sometimes show up more clearly the next day than at the end of the session itself. If you’re frustrated at the end of a session because a trick isn’t clicking, that’s not necessarily the final verdict. Come back after a night’s sleep before deciding.

Spaced practice over massed practice. Four twenty-minute sessions across a week beat one eighty-minute session, for the same total practice time. Each fresh attempt after a break forces your brain to re-retrieve the movement pattern rather than just riding momentum from the last attempt, and that retrieval effort is part of what builds durable skill.

Narrate less as you improve. The explicit, step-by-step self-talk that helps you get the general shape of a trick becomes a liability once you’re closer to landing it consistently. Overthinking a movement you’ve mostly got interferes with the automatic execution you’re trying to build. If you’re landing it three times in ten and thinking hard about each one, try landing it three times in ten while thinking about almost nothing at all.

Video yourself. Adults are good at analysis but bad at accurately perceiving their own body position in real time. A slow-motion video of your attempt gives your explicit-learning strengths something concrete to work with, instead of relying on your best guess at what you just did.

The comparison that’s actually useful

Comparing your current learning speed to your teenage self is close to meaningless — different brain, different body, different amount of unstructured free time to throw at it. The useful comparison is to your own trajectory: are you landing it more often this week than last week? That’s the only signal that matters, and it’s one that keeps moving in your favor with consistent practice, whatever your age.

Permission to be slow at first

None of this means the first attempts won’t feel bad. They will. The self-conscious, effortful, thinking-too-hard phase is not a sign you’re doing it wrong — it’s the normal entry point for adult motor learning, and it passes faster than it feels like it will in the moment.

The brain that’s frustrating you in week one is the same brain that’s going to make the movement automatic by week four, if you keep showing up. It hasn’t lost the capacity. It’s just running the process in a different order than it did when you were fifteen.
