The Skate Shoe Problem Nobody Warns You About After 40
Physiotherapist and skater. Came back to skating at 49 and hasn't stopped.
When returning adult skaters ask me about gear, I cover helmets, wrist guards, and knee pads. The question I should add before all of those is one that gets very little coverage: what are you wearing on your feet?
Footwear is the most consistently underestimated factor in how comfortable skateboarding is on aging joints, and the design of skate shoes makes it specifically counterproductive for adult bodies.
The Design Conflict
Skate shoes are designed around a very specific performance requirement: board feel. The closer your foot is to the board surface, the more sensitive your feedback about what the board is doing. This translates to better control for technical skating, especially in tricks where subtle board manipulation matters.
The design consequence: extremely flat, extremely thin soles. No arch support. No heel cushioning. No significant midsole. In technical skate shoes — the kind most commonly sold at skate shops — you are separated from the concrete by roughly 5–8mm of rubber.
This is fine at 17. At 47, it is not fine.
What Happens to Your Feet and Joints at 40+
Several things are different about a foot and lower-limb chain at 45 compared to 20:
Plantar fascia. The connective tissue along the bottom of the foot loses elasticity with age. Impact that the plantar fascia would have absorbed at 20 now transmits upward to the ankle, knee, and hip. Skating on thin-soled shoes on hard concrete is a reliable way to develop plantar fasciitis.
Fat pad atrophy. The natural fat pads in the heel and ball of the foot — which act as biological shock absorbers — thin with age. This is why concrete feels harder underfoot at 50 than it did at 20. It literally is, from your body’s perspective.
Cartilage and joint load. Repetitive impact on inadequately cushioned feet accelerates the transmission of load to the knee joint. For adults with existing cartilage thinning (very common by 40, especially in former athletes), this matters. The difference between skating on appropriate footwear and skating on technical skate shoes is measurably different in knee load.
Arch changes. Foot arches tend to flatten with age and weight. A flatter arch changes load distribution throughout the lower limb, often increasing stress on the inside of the knee (a major site of cartilage wear).
None of this means you can’t skate. It means footwear choices matter more than they did when you were 20.
The Skate Shoe Options That Work for Adults
The good news: the skate shoe market has evolved. There are now models within the mainstream skate shoe category that provide meaningfully more cushioning without sacrificing so much board feel that they become impractical for skating.
Vans Skate Pro series. The skate-specific upgrade to classic Vans silhouettes. The DURACAP sole provides significantly more durability than standard Vans, with Pop-Cush cushioning inserts that Vans specifically developed for their skating athletes. Better board feel than running shoes; significantly more cushioning than basic Vans Authentics. Good all-round choice.
Nike SB Dunk and Nike SB Zoom family. Nike’s Zoom Air cushioning is genuine foam with real shock absorption. The Zoom unit sits in the forefoot and sometimes the heel, providing meaningful impact protection while maintaining a relatively thin sole profile. The SB line is designed by and for skaters; the cushioning is specifically tuned for repeated concrete impact.
Emerica Reynolds or Wino G6. Emerica’s adult pro team skates in their own shoes and provides significant feedback on cushioning requirements. The Reynolds and Wino lines both have Heritage or G6 cushioning platforms that provide substantially more protection than entry-level skate shoes.
Lakai Telford or Manchester. Lakai’s Flick HX sole compound and Ortholite footbed make their mid-range and higher shoes more comfortable for extended sessions than most comparably priced alternatives.
The Insole Upgrade: Non-Negotiable at 40+
Even the best skate shoe benefits from an aftermarket insole when you’re an adult skating regularly. This is the upgrade that returning adult skaters most commonly overlook and most commonly wish they’d started earlier.
What an aftermarket insole does that the shoe alone doesn’t:
- Heel cushioning. A dedicated heel cup with impact-absorbing material (foam, gel, or air) directly under the heel bone reduces the jarring from pushing and landing.
- Arch support. A properly shaped arch support reduces arch collapse on landing, which reduces knee load.
- Forefoot cushioning. Additional material under the ball of the foot reduces the specific impact associated with landing from any height.
Recommended insoles for skaters:
Superfeet Blue or Green. Superfeet are made for high-impact sport footwear, are easy to find, and provide genuine arch support and heel cushioning. The Blue is slightly more flexible (better for skate shoes with less internal room). The Green is firmer and better for those with significant arch collapse.
Spenco Polysorb Active. Good balance of cushioning and stability at a lower price point than Superfeet.
Sole Performance. Heat-moldable insole that creates a custom fit for your specific arch shape. Slightly higher cost ($60–$80) but the custom fit is worth it if you have unusual arch shape or have had foot issues.
The total cost of an aftermarket insole is $35–$80. The difference in how your knees feel at the end of a session is immediately noticeable.
Practical Recommendations by Skating Type
Mellow park skating and flatground (most returning adults): Vans Skate Pro or Nike SB Zoom with a Superfeet Blue insole. Good board feel, genuine cushioning, available everywhere.
Bowl and transition skating: Nike SB Dunk with Zoom + Superfeet Green. The additional cushioning matters more for the impact of landing on transitions.
Casual cruising and longboarding: Less restricted here because board feel matters less. Running shoes with good cushioning can actually work for longboarding. Any skate shoe with insoles is fine.
If you have existing knee problems: The Emerica Reynolds G6 or Lakai Telford + Superfeet Blue. Maximise cushioning without going to a running shoe sole that would compromise push feel.
When to Replace Skate Shoes
Skate shoes wear asymmetrically. The toe of your dominant foot shreds against the griptape before the heel wears out. Most skaters replace shoes when the toe cap breaks through — typically every 3–5 months with regular skating.
Don’t skate on worn-through skate shoes. Once the toe cap rubber is gone and fabric is exposed, board feel degrades significantly, and the compromised structure means the cushioning properties elsewhere in the shoe are also compromised.
The insole can often be transferred to a new shoe. If the insole is still structurally sound, take it out and put it in the replacement pair.
Footwear is the piece of kit you interact with every second of skating. It’s worth getting right, and at 45, getting it right means more than “skate brand = good.” It means cushioning, support, and ongoing replacement when the shoe structure is gone.
